Review: Rugged Majority Landbeach radio is built for the outdoors

Summer is fast approaching and the sun is out, so what better time to take your tunes with you whether that's to the park or the beach.

Rugged, portable outdoor speakers are a crowded field but Majority has given it a good go with its latest release - the Landbeach Portable Bluetooth Water Resistant Worksite DAB+ Radio.

I have always been impressed by the Cambridge-based company's products, which tend to mix good performance with a very competitive price. They are also robust and come with a three-year warranty just in case.

Robust is also the word you think when you see the Landbeach. It's a portable box of sturdy plastic, and feels like it would survive an accidental drop or two. It measures 16.7cm x 23cm x 14.4cm, and weighs 1.52 kg.

The primary focus is on the radio function, which offers DAB/DAB+ and FM. I found the reception to be pretty strong where I live (which can sometimes feel like a digital blackspot). There are, of course, issues around DAB which is not Majority's fault but if you're going to get a signal the Landbeach will pick it up.

It's also a pretty simple affair to save your favourite channels (you can store 40 of them using the phyical buttons). Of course, radio is only half the story. The device can also act as a Buetooth speaker and here, again, everything is straightforward.

The Landbeach has 5.0 Bluetooth connectivity which means a strong connection with your phone, tablet or computer.

So what's the speaker quality like? Very decent for the price. Plenty good enough when you're out and about, and to be honest pretty good when you're at home as well.

However, it's when you're on your travels that the radio has been designed for. As I mentioned before it feels solid enough, and it has been designed to be water resistant so you can feel confident that nothing will happen to it when you're poolside.

Battery life is a whopping 28 hours. There's so much power you can even use it as a charger for your phone which is another handy trick.

My only gripe., however. is there is no battery level on the device. I've had Majority products where that info has been hidden in the settings but this time it's nowhere to be found (or at least I couldn't find it).

Another couple of things to note is that you also get an AUX input for external audio devices, and a headphone jack for private listening. There is also a sleep timer and a snooze timer, plus six EQ presets.

Although bigger and heavier than some of its compeititors, the Landbeach does a lot for the money with the big battery and the phone charging function really does set it apart from others

What users say

"I was expecting a good radio but this is excellent. Fantastic sound, DAB signal and Bluetooth connection. The ultimate does it all speakre"

"This is a great radio. Supports all music requirements and was very easy to pair to stream from my tablet. 30w speaker gives clear and loud sound, so you should be able to hear it over machines in a workshop... I've not yet tried but it was loud in the house. For the price compared to the more expensive other devices available, this is a good choice to consider"
