Etekcity Infrared Thermometer for grill, RV and home use

This versatile point-and-click infrared thermometer has uses inside the RV (or home) and out, especially now that grilling and barbecue season is upon us.

Certain grilling techniques require temperature monitoring, especially low-and-slow smoking, or high-temperature pizza making, in addition to a host of other outdoor and indoor cooking tasks.

With this thermometer all you do is point, click the button, or hold and scan if you want the overall temp of an area, say a cooking surface, and you get an instant read of the temperature. It’s quick, easy and, at least so far, seems to be accurate. (I will admit it is a relatively new outdoor cooking accessory to me as I write this, so I cannot speak to longevity.)

What I especially like about the Etekcity Infrared Thermometer

  • I wanted a point-and-shoot thermometer, especially for checking grill and smoker temperatures, but I did not want to spend a lot. This one is under $20 at Amazon but had excellent overall reviews.
  • It was quick and easy to learn to use.
  • The 12:1 distance-to-spot ratio enables you to accurately measure targets from a comfortable distance away. For best results, position the oven thermometer approximately 14 inches from the target.
  • It has an adjustable emissivity mode that lets you quickly change the emissivity level. (Emissivity is how well a given surface emits thermal energy, i.e., the shinier the surface, the lower the emissivity.) Whether working on your car or testing the temperature of your grill, the Etekcity infrared thermometer will help you get the job done.
  • Wide temperature range: Choose your preferred unit (F or C) and measure temperatures anywhere within the upgraded range of -58° to 842°F / -50° to 450°C.
  • Results appear on the bright LCD display in less than half a second.
  • Versatile Design: Infrared technology allows you to measure various objects at home and outdoors. Use it for grill, griddle, cooking, vehicle’s engine, other automotive use, ovens, A/C, refrigerators, DIY jobs, and more. I have even used it to temper chocolate.
  • Backlit LCD display is easy to see.
  • Auto-off function extends battery life.
  • Low battery indicator lets you know when it’s time for a new pair of AAA batteries. (The thermometer comes with batteries pre-installed, though, so you can use it right out of the box.)

What can be improved?

While I have only been using this for a few weeks, I have done a lot of grilling and pizza-making in that time and so far I have no complaints. I have even used this thermometer to successfully temper chocolate.

One important note, and this is not an improvement as much as the nature of the beast when dealing with lasers: NEVER use this laser thermometer on humans or animals as the laser is potentially blinding!
